Fixed Line Broadband Wireless Broadband Our Mission ORB’s mission is to help our local communities access broadband services at affordable and market competitive prices, using “best of breed” wired and wireless technologies. Background During the summer of 2003 it became clear to the people that were running individual campaigns to get ADSL into the exchanges of rural Oxfordshire, that it would be best to work together. ORB was formed in Autumn 2003 by these campaigners to speed up the rollout of broadband working with their communities, the public and private sectors. In July 2005, ORB was transferred into ownership by the communities it serves, still using the same structure and principles. Community Enterprise ORB is a community enterprise. Formally, is it a company limited by guarantee that uses model memorandum and articles of association from Co-ops UK. The company is owned and controlled by its members who elect a management committee, on a one member one vote basis, to oversee the day to day operation. The membership is made up of broadband campaigners, organisations that support community enterprise and, most importantly, ORB’s customers. The community enterprise structure ensures that the maximum economic value is kept within the community. Strategy We have two strands to our strategy:- ORB will continue to provide a wireless service for the areas currently served Where an exchange has been enabled for ADSL, we offer an ORB branded service that is backed by a major Internet Service provider. Services ORB offers broadband Internet access at market competitive prices. We are working with the communities we serve to add other services such as community TV and radio, low cost voice services, CCTV and gaming. What we have learnt is that the when communities are fully engaged with broadband the creativity released can be phenomenal and we cannot predict how it will develop. Technology ORB uses aggregated ADSL circuits and a technology called Sharedband, which relies on multiple points of connection throughout the community. This ensures that the connection to the Internet is high speed both directions and has very low latency (the multiple ADSL connections ensure that the upload speed is always considerably faster than a single connection!). From this central point the 'first mile' into our member’s premises will use the Wi-Fi standard. This has been selected because the hardware is inexpensive, low power, tried and tested. This means that the network can be installed quickly, reliably and discreetly with minimal impact on the environment, a key consideration in rural areas. | |
